Dear Colleague
"You don’t have to be an Internet expert to benefit from its potential"
Are you fed up with feeling inadequate just because you don’t understand the language??
A Story...
I was suggesting to my client Mark the other day that he should consider arranging his own web site hosting, since it would mean that he was in total control. But before I had even mentioned giving their website designer the FTP password, I could see that I had lost him: I recognised that glazed look.
This got me thinking about exactly what the problem was. The concepts of the Internet are not that difficult and can often be explained in simple terms. So the problem had to be the jargon. The whole computer and Internet world has spawned its own impenetrable language. But then we are just as guilty with our average room rates, yield management and RevPAR that must be just as strange to anyone from outside the industry.
I had nearly finished this ‘internet jargon buster’ so I sent a copy to Mark. Well I was shocked, and surprised, the next time we spoke. He had signed up his own hosting account (at around 1/3 of the cost proposed by his web designer) and had already set up two e-mail addresses. He proudly told me that it wasn’t that difficult!
Just think back to the last time you had to reach for your dictionary when a supplier made a proposal? Would you have loved to really understand what he was on about?
But there is no doubt that the Internet, whether it is your own website or third party suppliers, is a vital part of your efforts to increase your room revenue. Consider this fact: Merrill Lynch predicts that by 2010 around 45% of hotel reservations will be made via the Internet. Some experts predict that it will be even higher.
To take advantage of this potential revenue it is up to every business owner to really get to grips with the Internet. And the first phase is to really understand the language.
As you know, you gain much more from your holiday experiences if you speak the language and can communicate with the local population. The Internet is no different. Just learn the language. It really isn’t that difficult.
